Evaluating and benchmarking staff experiences across clinical trials to improve operations

Need

Large clinical trials are expensive undertakings, conducted over the span of several years and across many different countries at a time. The operational aspect of trial conduct is complicated by contextual factors, including cultural differences. While there is clear focus on medical outcomes, operational learnings are seldom captured.

Solution

Using a comprehensive suite of evaluation methods, we provided 360-degree insights into pain points in trial conduct across 3 major trials. Resulting datasets were combined, forming the basis for a persistent benchmarking repository for future trial operations data. We identified practical improvements to ease the lives of staff and patients, allowing a reprioritisation of resources to reduce operational costs for the sponsor as well.

Process

Over the course of 2 years, we collected feedback from trial staff through tailored surveys, 1:1 interviews, and focus groups, synthesising findings in workshop sessions with operational stakeholders and global project leaders. Cross-trial executive recommendations were delivered to the global leadership team.
